In August, 2015, a Vietnamese citizen was appointed to managing director of Ford in Vietnam. In September, 2015, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary ceremony, Ford had the honor receiving the second labor medal by the president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

This is a vital benchmark testifying to the ceaseless effort of Ford aiming at giving the most sustainable values about products, technology, environment and human as well in Vietnam market.

Mr. Phạm Văn DÅ©ng – the new Managing Director of Ford Vietnam shared with Saigon New Day, in his peaceful and friendly manner about the truest he himself has experienced and gained through the process of showing Vietnamese ability and integrating in a group renowned to the world.

Being appointed to Ford Vietnam’s Managing Director, at the peak of success, and getting the Second labor medal, do you find plenty of pressure while running your post?

There have been challenges as there must be, as we not only have to make consumers know and trust the brand Ford; assure sustainable growth for the business; our committment to training and developing staff, our system of dealers, sales, service and maintaining Ford Vietnam’s success; but also to deserve Vietnam’s president’s recent recognition of the company’s contribution to the development of Vietnam automobile industry as one of the leading companies.

However, with the good cooperation of our excellent staff that have been matured throughout the past 20 years, which has been guided by Ford’s global strategy, I believe in plenty of new experiences and grown-ups with Ford Vietnam.

Looking back at Ford Vietnam’s journey, will you share with us some achievements in the past 20 years?

Ford Vietnam was established in September 1995 – right after VN-U.S. normalization of relations. This was then the automobile joint-venture with largest investment capital and one of the U.S. largest investment projects in Vietnam, with total investment capital now of USD 126 million.

In November 1997, Hai Duong automibile assembly factory started operation with modern production process. This is the sole fatory in Vietnam with the capacity of measuring car’s body 3 D scanning, also a modern system of car’s finish checking, hi-tech meeting all international requirements.

Ford is also the first automobile companies in Vietnam that meet ISO 9001, ISO 14001, QS 9000 and ISO/TS16949 – 2002 on quality and invironmental management.

In terms of Ford successes, the following figures tell. Currently, Ford Vietnam has developed a network of 29 exclusive dealers and service centers in 15 towns and provinces nationwide. In 1997, Ford Vietnam sold 300 cars a year, whereas in 2014, the sale was nearly 14,000.

From 2010 to April 2015, Ford Vietnam contributed to state budget nearly VND 7,400 bilion.

We introduced to market 9 car ranges of various versions. Each later version has improvement on design and quality versus the earlier.

Particularly, in 3 recent years, Ford has been one of automobile brands having the fastest growth on Vietnam market. From the 7th (in 1997), currently Ford market share has continuously increased and got the 3rd rank.

Ford Vietnam’s effective business has also got national awards such as Emulation Flags of Ministry of Trade and Industry; 12 successive years’ Golden Dragon award…

As you think, what is the cause of Ford’s success?

Ford Vietnam’s development is guided by a global Ford’s business strategy, which has been effectively applied to all operation areas, including “One staff force, One plan, One purpose”. It is complemented with staff’s effort and the support of ministerial levels of the government and local authority, which has helped with Ford’s sustainable development in Vietnam market.

Ford Vietnam is also one of the leading in contributing to the community in Vietnam. Will you share something about this?

Our corporate mission is that an enterprise not only produces the best product and service for consumers but also helps build a better community, a better world with its realistic activity programs.

Since the founding, Ford Vietnam has always taken local social work our own responsibility for the community; in which, Ford is particularly concerned and active in enhancing awareness of trafice safety, such as in the Program “Guidance of Safe Drive, Friendly to Environment”, the campaign No Horn Blaring has positively been disseminated in Vietnamese youth community.

Every year, Ford employs the Global Care week offering thousands of work by staff and dealers doing social work for the community around them, such as gift donation to the libraries for orphanage and disabled children, cleaning ponds and parks in the city, planting trees or helping poor childrens and lonely old aged people …

Recently, we have also got the honor to receive the certicicate of merit by the Ministry of Traffic and Transport for “Achievements of many merrits in propaganda for enhancing car driving, contributing to traffic safety in 2015”

How do you feel as the first Vietnamese citizen to get to CEO of Ford Vietnam?

Entering the benchmark of 20 years, Ford’s appoiting the first Vietnamese CEO shows the maturity of local staff that have got scientic proper training, as well as Ford’s commitment to long-term development plan.

I’m proud of my many opportunities of learning, experiencing new things, and developing my profession in an international environment. Actually this requires me of a passion for work, ceaseless effort for learning and the wish for the best professional growth.

Ford always encourages staff members to have clear career development plan and offers support thereof, ensuring fairness in opportunity and condition for optimal development of staff prospect. The policy of staff rotation also brings many opportunities for knowledge enhancement, skill development and more career promotions.

In 2004-2005, being in charge of finance for the Sales and Service of Ford Australia, I worked in a developed market and learnt a lot of experiences in that multi-cultural professional market.

What do you think about consumer’s trend in Vietnam?

Vietnam market has great potential for automobile industry because of its over 90 million population, of which the middle-class has been growing strongly yet the proportion of personal ownership of cars is still low.

I believe with the product strategy which is customer tailor-made policy – upon the four key pillars of the brand: quality, fuel economy, environmentally friendly, smart, and safety, Ford can meet the diversified needs of Vietnamese consumers with its products.
