Associate Professor Ph.D Nguyen Manh Hung : Creating "The Brand" for students

“My success, my biggest happiness at this school was the creation of real good students with quality and ability to work, and thus contribution to society”, he said. Associate professor Ph.D Nguyen Manh Hung - chairman of the board of directors of saigon apparel jsc. cumprincipal of Nguyen Tat Thanh university set the foundation for the university 16 years ago. at present, the school has got first labor medal and has produced thousands or engineers, graduates with a bachelor’s degree, skilled technicians to meet the need for quality labor to many companies at home and abroad.

So far it’s been known that Nguyen Tat Thanh University is under Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association. Please tell us the reason why a business wanted to start a school?

Investors and I have been trained overseas, we thus have a wish to create a good educational environment for Vietnamese students (similar to the goodness of foreign ones); all the time, I have writhed with the agony “Why grads don’t meet corporate needs?”

Seeing the gap in training, we were determined to build up a college from where new grads always meet the practical needs of businesses.

The principle of training “Real study- Realistic practice- real value- real career” successfully connects the 4 pillars: “The business-The manager-The researcher-The school”; Nguyen Tat Thanh University not only equips students with knowledge, job skills but also soft skills, foreign language command, living skills to help 95% students get the job after graduation.

What areas are the distinctions of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, please?

NTT University is one of those that applied the outcome criteria for each faculty of training. Pursuant to that, the student has to meet the requirements of general knowledge and specialty, foreign languages, informatics, professional skills, soft skills… oriented by the labor market. Many course syllabuses of the school are formatted pursuant to international criteria, being evaluated by AUN-QA of South-East Asian Universities. Besides, the school has been building up the projects to provide labor force to meet MNC companies such as Samsung, Intel, AEON.

The course syllabus of Nguyen Tat Thanh University is properly up-dated; it’s not only designed by experienced instructors, but also modified by leader experts of businesses being joined with the school via Nguyen Tat Thanh club, run by over 100 members working in a variety of areas, also where the school boards, businesses, employers meet, exchange ideas and get cooperated to enhance the teaching quality and also to create employees capable of specialty and career application.

Looking back at the last 16 years’ process, will you tell us about the achievements of Nguyen Tat Thanh University?

Since the foundation of the school, we have been assertive about our mission of training, producing people with strong knowledge on technology, social sciences and humanities, with clear join in the renovation of thinking in thinking and creativity to actively community. So far, throughout the last 16 years, Nguyen Tat Thanh University has nearly attained the cause.

Apart from the investment in and growing human resource with 2,000 instructors, permanent and visiting, a labor hero, a people’s teacher, 8 professors, 20 associate professors, 80 plus Ph.D, and nearly 500 Master’s degree staff, the school has particular concern about building premises.

The school currently has 8 premises in Ho Chi Minh City providing over 500 classrooms, to provide 20,000 seats to students of 20 faculties, 51 course syllabuses having full portfolio of medicine, economics, finance, technological engineering, social sciences, foreign languages, painting art. Every year, the school donates over 5 billion VND as scholarships given to students.

One of the most outstanding achievements of Nguyen Tat Thanh University is that a very big sum is invested in scientific research for instructors and students with budget of over 10 billion Vietnam dong a year. Since 2011 till now, there have been over 100 theses of various levels chaired by the school’s instructors, in which there are 8 theses at governmental level, 16 at ministerial level.

Not only a high quality study environment, the school also creates training conditions to students to get them exposed to reality via national examinations, continental levels and international levels such as the English Orator Contest, HCMC Youth Creativity Festival, Euréka student scientist, and especially the ASEAN craft contest. The students have brought to the school the victory by valuable prizes, medals, certificates of merits from the contests.

Will you share the reason why Nguyen Tat Thanh University has got such good results?

In 2001, we were one of the first companies of the textile and apparel industry switching to joint-stock company. The Board and I had to cope with difficulty in deciding the new approach for the company. In front of choices like transferring land ownership to get a very big sum, or else to build apartment buildings for super profit purpose, I persuaded the Board to invest in building a school with the motto “Training going with practice, assuring Learner’s benefit, Teacher’s benefit, Community’s benefit”.

16 years is not the age old enough for Nguyen Tat Thanh University; however, we have been able to make full use of the inner strength of management team, experienced in businesses, combining with the outer power of leader experts in arts and studies and scientific research to sow the seeds directing the young teaching staff.

Creating the “brand” for students is the sincerest commitment of the school to the student. This is a maxim, a new approach of educating that has been assessed as realistic and effective.

As an enterprise doing school education, we’ve had breakthrough thinking, directing the building up of educational organization in line with a corporate view. If an enterprise has to improve all the time, making new products, diversifying products to meet the need state of customers; the school itself has to change the course syllabus, management approach… to suit students and enterprise’s needs. They are the customers that need corporate care.

To develop the achievement we’ve got, we will go on with developing to make Nguyen Tat Thanh University one of the leading schools in the region, and the world over in future.

In order to make Nguyen Tat Thanh University one of the leading in the region, what will be done in coming time, please?

With over 15,000 students going to the university together with the above mentioned achievements, we take pride in contributing to the school’s reputation in the country’s great cause of “human growing”.

To make Nguyen Tat Thanh University comparable to those in the region, we’ll be going on developing the teaching staff to have high expertise, teaching experience and commitment; building the course syllabus towards career orientation and application to acquire the standard of international colleges (pursuant to the need of the employer); pushing up English teaching in the school; enhancing international cooperation on education and training…

Apart from the 8 premises right in HCMC center, we have started the building of the current high-tech center 4.7 ha large, situated in HCMC hi-tech center with the expense of VND 1.1 billion. This is one of the important steps ahead to build up the foundation to develop Nguyen Tat Thanh University to be a central university, with the orientation combining application in it to meet the outcome for enterprises at home and abroad, moving currently towards regional and international requirement in the intellectual economy, integration.
